Using discarded materials from the surrounding neighborhoods, I have assembled what--in the hands of a determined Cuban migrant--could become a raft intended to cross the 90-mile stretch of ocean between the Caribbean island and the southern tip of the United States. Part of a larger body of work, which deals with the issue of Cuban migration and the involvement of the U.S. government, this piece was meant to focus on the physicality of these rafts (balsas), drawing attention to the materials that are used to construct these dangerously makeshift vessels.
