performance with AGROFEMME at the site of the out-of-service funicular station for the beachside district of Barranco, in Lima, Peru. organized by Anaze Izquierdo for the Encuentro: Espacio abierto a libre performance festival.
AGROFEMME stands in "x" formation underneath the funicular car, where the tracks would have connected with the support structure for the vehicle. Leaning back, with feet anchored amongst the steel beams for leverage, AF is otherwise precariously untethered to the funicular at the top of the hillside. Across her waist is a thick rope, which I, 20+ feet away, am using to climb up the rock face towards the car.
At a point on the cliff, which juts outward creating a significant increase in the angle steepness, I stop climbing. Here, AF and I attempt for several minutes to lock eyes and hold our mutually dependent and strenuous positions, trusting each other completely. Were AF to lean forward in this moment, giving in to the full weight of my body pulling on her mid-section, I would fall backwards over the precipice and tumble down the hill. Likewise, were I to pull very suddenly against the rope, I might hurl AF off of the structure, sending both of us through the overgrown and rocky hill beneath us.
